Choosing the Perfect Location
Oahu is not lacking in beautiful and memorable places to propose - any side of the island has the potential to be an amazing spot. When choosing a location, consider these things: weather, crowds, and wind.
Weather: Oahu's weather is generally pleasant year-round, but consider the time of year and potential weather conditions:
Summer (June to August): Warm and humid, with occasional tropical showers.
Winter (December to February): Cooler and drier, with occasional rain showers.
Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November): Mild and pleasant, ideal for outdoor proposals.
Crowds: Oahu's peak tourist season is during the Summer (June to August) and Winter (December to February) months, which means popular spots may be more crowded.
Consider proposing during the shoulder season (April to May or September to November) for smaller crowds and a more intimate atmosphere.
Wind: If the wind is anything above 15-20mph, you can almost guarantee that any decor, flowers, or food you bring might get blown around.
Consider areas that are sheltered from wind - coves, trees, etc.
Syncing the Moment with Sunset
In Oahu, it typically takes about 30-40 minutes for the sky to darken after sunset. This is because Hawaii is near the equator, and the sun's path across the sky is more direct, resulting in shorter twilight periods. In our experience, the prettiest, brightest colors happen 5-10 minutes after the sun sets.
Here's a rough idea of the exact times the sun sets during different parts of the year:
Winter (November and December): 5:30 p.m. to approximately 6:00 p.m.
Spring (March and April): 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Summer (May to August): 7 p.m. to 7:15 pm, or even slightly later
Fall (September and October): Sunset times gradually start moving back to an earlier schedule
When planning, consider the exact ambiance you want to capture. Keep in mind that the look and feel of sunset (around 7:15 p.m. in the winter - for example) is distinct from twilight (approximately 7:40-8:20 p.m.).
Make sure to specify which atmosphere you prefer for photos, the moment itself, and what you think your partner would love most for this lifelong memory.
Adding Tailored Touches
Here are some examples of elegant ways to dress up your proposal.
Candlelit pathway: Line the path to the proposal spot with candles, leading your partner to the special moment.
Personalized message in a bottle: Write a love letter or proposal message and place it in a bottle for your partner to find.
Flower petal trail: Scatter flower petals leading to the proposal spot, creating a romantic and fragrant path.
Special song: Play your partner's favorite love song or a song that holds special meaning for the two of you.
Lei ceremony: Present your partner with a beautiful lei.
Surfboard message: Write "Will you marry me?" on a surfboard and have your partner discover it on the beach.
Lantern release: Release lanterns with a special message and propose during the magical moment.
Illuminated Surprises: Use a remote-controlled light-up sign to guide your partner along the beach, building anticipation and excitement, without giving away the surprise from a distance.
Seashell message: Create a heart-shaped design or a "Marry Me" sign using seashells, symbolizing your love and commitment.
'
Heart-shaped sand art: Create a heart-shaped design in the sand, with shells, flowers, or candles.
Making it an Experience
When we founded our company, we made a conscious decision to create proposals that would be truly unforgettable experiences. To make your proposal an entire event, we've come up with some ideas to build up the excitement throughout the day, making it a truly lifelong memory. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Private catamaran sail: Propose while sailing on a private catamaran off the coast of Oahu. (Some extra pizazz: have Oahu Picnic Retreats set up a picnic on the catamaran - just like the movies!)
Paddle to Paradise: Embark on a leisurely kayaking adventure with your partner, gently guiding them to a secluded proposal spot.
Capture the Moment: Arrange a romantic beach photoshoot with a talented photographer, and surprise your partner mid-session by dropping to one knee and proposing.
Going on a treasure hunt: Create a treasure hunt with clues leading to the proposal.
Private beach dinner: Arrange a private beach dinner with a personalized menu and a special proposal message.
Shell of a Lifetime: Go on a scenic beach walk with your partner, searching for seashells together. Guide them to a particularly striking shell (like this one), and reveal the surprise inscription - "Will you marry me?"
Seaside horseback ride: Have horses take you and your beloved to your proposal setup.
Planning Logistics
Don't let practical details overshadow the perfection of your proposal! Be prepared and have a plan in place. If you intend to toast your special moment with a glass of champagne or a few celebratory drinks, consider arranging for a safe and convenient ride home in advance. Book a Lyft or Uber to ensure a stress-free and memorable experience.
Average Uber/Lyft Prices for a one-way ride (rough estimates):
Staying within Waikiki: $30 and under
Waikiki to the east side of Oahu (Kailua/Kaneohe): $40-$60
Waikiki to the west side of Oahu (Kapolei, Ewa, Waianae): $55-$75
Waikiki to the north side of Oahu (Pupukea, Haliewa): $60-$100

While location, timing, food, and experience are all important aspects of a proposal, the most crucial element is making it personal and tailored to the one you love. Your proposal should be a reflection of your partner's unique style, interests, and preferences. By incorporating meaningful details and thoughtful gestures, you'll show your love and appreciation for who they are and make the moment truly unforgettable. Remember, the goal is to make your partner feel seen, heard, and cherished, so don't be afraid to get creative and make it your own!
